As we enter hurricane season, it’s important to note that the liveaboard community is the most vulnerable community during storms. Not only are their residents susceptible to wind and waves, but passage to and from the vessel may be impossible, as the U.S. Coast Guard may close the port when a storm is threatening.
That’s why it’s vital that liveaboard residents have a well thought out plan for the season. Even a tropical storm can be dangerous to ride out on a boat. Now is the time to establish a place on land to ride out lesser storms. Should an evacuation be called, it’s vital for liveaboard residents to respond early.
Have everything at the ready that you will need in case of an evacuation, including important papers, medicine, and cash.
Finally, the most important aspect of preparedness during storm season is to stay informed. Be sure you have a fully functional VHS radio and stay abreast of channel 16. Check the weather regularly through the National Weather Service Key West. Watch for notices posted at the dockmaster’s office.
