Little Torch man dies diving for lobster

A 60 year old Little Torch Key man died today while scuba diving for lobster offshore of Cudjoe Key.

At 10:30 a.m., off the gulf side of Cudjoe Key, William Simko was diving in 10 to 12 feet of water for lobster when he reportedly became distressed. He called for help. His son was on board their vessel with four others. They heard him calling for help, jumped into the water and brought him back to the boat.

They began to perform CPR on Simko while calling for assistance on their VHF radio. A Navy helicopter heard the call for assistance and responded. They picked up Simko and flew him to Lower Keys Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Major Crimes Detective Manny Cuervo has been assigned to investigate the case. An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of his death.
