Lights on After School Day
Mayor Teri Johnston and the City Commission have proclaimed October 28th as Lights on After School Day.
Judy Leggett, executive director and CEO of the Boys and Girls Club of the Keys, accepted the proclamation and thanked the elected officials and staff for their commitment and dedication to the Club.
The designation recognizes the importance of quality afterschool programs and opportunities.
Programs like those offered by the Boys and Girls Club provide safe, challenging, and engaging learning experiences that help children develop social, emotional, physical and academic skills. They support working families by ensuring their children are safe and productive after the regular school day ends.
In addition, these vital programs build stronger communities by involving students, parents, business leaders and adult volunteers in the lives of young people, thereby promoting positive relationships among youth, families and adults.

Currently, approximately 1.5 million children and youth in Florida are waiting for a spot in an afterschool program, many of whom have no place to go after school. Many afterschool programs across the state are facing funding and staffing shortfalls so severe that they are being forced to close their doors and tum off their lights.
“The City of Key West is committed to investing in the health and safety of all young people,” reads the proclamation, “by providing expanded learning opportunities that will help close the achievement gap and prepare young people to compete in the global economy.”
