LETTERS TO THE EDITOR / ACTIONS TRUMP WORDS

Roger C. Kostmayer

The nation is in the vortex of a political and criminal storm. It won’t be long before each of us, along with elected representatives, must decide if a US President suborned perjury by telling others to lie under oath and/or obstructed justice. Finding the truth isn’t always easy, but it’s essential in a democracy that the people do that by supporting the Constitutional process and the results.

Many Americans are struggling with financial pressures, family or health issues, and don’t have the luxury of time – time to read, time to listen and time to analyze important but complex issues. But Americans have a history of ultimately using their common sense, empathy and integrity to reach difficult conclusions, even if the person was a leader in their party. (Think about Senator Joe McCarthy, VP Agnew, and President Nixon among others.) If you are asked about an accused politician for whom you voted, your response may well be defensive or protective of him. But if asked to put yourself in a completely innocent politician’s shoes and then decide, in good faith, what actions you would, and would not take – the response is likely to be different when compared with the acts of the President.

For example, if you were innocent of the accusations and the charges, would you demand an immediate, thorough, professional and unbiased investigation to prove your innocence and protect your reputation? Would you insist on complete transparency by everyone and cooperate fully with the rule of law? Or, would you lie, tell others to lie, refuse transparency, do everything in your extraordinary power to obstruct, and conduct secret meetings with America’s adversaries while undercutting America’s intelligence community, Justice Department, and allies?

Americans are smart enough to answer those questions and understand that Truth, Justice and the Constitution, that says no one is above the law, are not partisan issues.
