Letter to the Editor / UNBELIEVABLE –  Is This Third Reich Redux?

I used to believe kings, fascists and dictators wouldn’t grow well on American soil.  Americans proved it in 1776, in the 1860’s, in WW I, beating Hitler and Mussolini in WW II, and winning the Cold War against the Soviet Union dictatorship just a few decades ago.  A unified America was proud to be “the land of the free and the home of the brave” and stood for freedom and independence at home and abroad.  Today, that belief is in doubt.

Though the people behind it are not yet clear, a “draft bill in Tallahassee would transfer (Key West’s) assets . .and revenues to Monroe County” (KeysWeekly), and Mayor Teri Johnston pointed out that some state legislators have worked hard to take local authority away from local governments and give it to the state.  Generally, Republican legislators in Florida don’t do such things without approval from their governor.

The well educated but crazed governor of Florida, who knows better, is so desperate to gain presidential power he’s emulating our anti-democratic, pro-autocratic and twice impeached prior president.  He and his partisan minions seem to be bent on destroying the free and independent city of Key West.  The legislation, designed to achieve the governor’s goals, seems to be driven by revenge for the KW community’s following audacities: in wanting to protect people from dying from Covid by following expert professional guidance; insisting their votes in free and fair elections are implemented (e.g. returning the right to vote to those who paid their debt to society, and requiring smaller, safer cruise ships for their port to protect environment and quality of life); wanting people to be treated with dignity and compassion regardless of whether they had all the proper papers- i.e. One Human Family); and banning certain sunscreens to protect local coral and waters.  Really !
