Letter to the Editor/ THE BEST, WORST and FUTURE

By Roger C. Kostmayer

It’s no longer reasonable to assume the 2016 election was a one off Black Swan event that couldn’t be repeated.  Trumpism and McConnellism don’t leave with the ex-President.

As a country, we have been extremely lucky to have chosen a number of extraordinary Presidents at critical moments in our history – George Washington and independence, Abe Lincoln and the civil war, FDR and both the Great Depression and WW II, and maybe Barack Obama and the Great Recession & affordable healthcare.  These brilliant lovers of democracy and our constitution (from different political parties) were rare needles in the haystack.  Many of us mistakenly assumed that this was normal, until a perfect bad storm in 2016 caused the Electoral College to choose the worst person possible as President – a loser (by almost 3 million votes), liar, fascist, racist, xenophobe, homophobe, and unqualified incompetent malignant narcissist.

The 2020 fight for the WH isn’t over because the two Senate seat run-offs, on January 5, 2021 in Georgia, are monumentally important to what happens over the next 4 years.  If at least one of the two Democrats (Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock) win and add one more Democratic Senate seat (which is tough but doable), it will be difficult for Sen. McConnell to obstruct every solution the Biden administration attempts, and should force more cooperation and compromise.

All eyes will be on Georgia for the next 50 days or so.
