Letter to the Editor / Silence is Betrayal
“The greatest tragedy of this period of social transition was not the strident clamor of vitriolic words and the violent actions of the bad people, but the appalling silence of the good people.”

“He who passively accepts evil is as much involved in it as he who helps to perpetrate it. There comes a time when silence is betrayal.”

“Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.” — Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Dr. King’s words are urgently needed in our current political climate; one in which civility and fairness has been replaced with anger, hate and division. To change the rhetoric of division, we must get involved.
We must stand up against every injustice that burdens our brothers and sisters, whoever and wherever they are, because we are all one. Dr. King insists we not merely watch injustice, but speak out and actively push back against it. Stand for something – or you stand for nothing.
Call our representatives and let them know that we, as a people, reject division and inequality. Call them repeatedly until they understand. Let them know that we DEMAND policies that unite us and treat everyone with equal rights, dignity and respect. Tell them you are watching, that you vote, and that keeping their jobs will depend on that. Be active now – or be complacent and complicit.
