Letter to the Editor / ONE PERSON

By Roger C. Kostmayer

Virtually everyone on our planet opposes the unprovoked war in Ukraine that could easily become WW III.  The purpose of the war, when Putin attacked Ukraine six months (and 8 years) ago, was to conquer, eliminate and occupy a smaller sovereign neighbor.

Virtually every nation opposes this deliberate mass murder, the torture of civilians and the crimes against humanity.  No  sane person wants to live under the threat of nuclear or chemical annihilation.  If these facts are undeniable, and they are, the question is: Who caused it?, Who perpetuates it? and Who could stop it?  The simple answer to each is, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin.

History shows that appeasing, negotiating with or being intimidated by similar ruthless dictators, ends badly. The only effective option is basically what we, and NATO, are doing – making sure that Ukraine and the civilized world win the war.  Democracy and civil society are at stake, so failure is not an option.

One of our President’s most critical successes is establishing absolute solidarity among NATO members and our European allies.  This means Putin understands that: he’s surrounded by more than 30 NATO countries and their superior military forces if he crosses the line; that the performance of the Russian military has been weak and abominable; and that a significant and growing number of Russians want nothing to do with genocide or the courageous Ukrainians.

Regardless of political views, if Americans and our allies are united on this critical anti-Putin issue, there’s good reason to believe that democracy and multilateralism will eventually win the day.
