LETTER TO THE EDITOR / JOE IS RIGHT

By Roger C. Kostmayer

President Joe Biden gave a great speech in Warsaw, at the end of which he spoke the undiplomatic truth to Russians and the world by saying – Dictator Putin can not remain in power after invading Ukraine twice, deliberately slaughtering thousands of women and children, and committing horrific crimes against humanity.

The President’s administration and State Department are correctly trying to find ways to stop the killing, help negotiate a peace, and give Putin an “off ramp” to save face.  They want to avoid admitting what virtually everyone (including many Russians) wants, which is to get rid of Putin.  It’s called “regime change”.

It sounds iconoclastic to violate traditional diplomatic procedures, but there are times when truth and reality are important, especially in international relations.  The two Ukrainian invasions by Putin aren’t routine international disputes where reasonable diplomats negotiate, compromise, shake hands at the end, and then continue as before.

The reality is if there is no regime change in Putin’s isolated autocracy, that country and its people will rapidly sink to desperate economic and social levels, unless or until there is regime change.

This conflict is Hitler redux and must be treated as such.
