Letter to the Editor / IT’S SIMPLE – NO MOTORIZED VEHICLES ON SIDEWALKS

By Roger C. Kostmayer

Mayor Teri is correct, opening our sidewalks and streets to more e-vehicles and motorized gadgets that attain high speeds, without a carefully thought-out set of regulations, would be dangerous and a huge mistake.

For the health and welfare of both our citizens and our environment, our top priority should be walking and biking (with as many bike lanes as possible).  These should be made more safe and more attractive before considering adding to the problem.   All other transportation – cars, trucks, tourist trains, busses, motorcycles, motorized bicycles and any type of motorized vehicle or electronic device should be kept off sidewalks and limited whenever possible.

(My transportation choice would be adding passenger boats and water taxis that would continually circumnavigate the island in opposite directions, and stop at a dozen or more pedestrian piers.  This would be similar to the Sunset Island ferry; Venice, Italy; and other island communities.)
