LETTER TO THE EDITOR / DOES PRIME MINISTER NETANYAHU WANT WAR – BECAUSE IT HELPS KEEP HIM IN POWER, AND OUT OF JAIL?

By Roger Kostmayer

The US is unequivocally committed to defending Israel, but we should not unconditionally supply and support OFFENSIVE military actions by Israel or any other ally.

Netanyahu has ignored and insulted US advice, especially humanitarian, while receiving enormous amounts of military weapons, intelligence and money from the US.  Did the US know about and approve Netanyahu’s attack on a Iranian embassy annex that killed a number of Iran’s senior military officers?  Was the decision to attack Iran based on Netanyahu’s need to shift the focus away from the way he was fighting Hamas and innocent Palestinians?

By contrast, the US and allies want to avoid a greater regional war, and Israel had to know that their attack risked exactly that.  Amazingly, Iran’s expected military response (several hundred missiles and drones that were mostly destroyed) saved face but did relatively little damage. The possible loss of life is reported as “maybe one”.

What’s needed now is less escalation.  Specifically, the focus should be: on releasing the hostages still alive; immediately providing humanitarian necessities (food, water and healthcare); suspending the war on Hamas; restraint by all key players; and commitment to a two state solution.

Since Netanyahu opposes all those things, the Israelis deserve what they want – removal of Netanyahu and his radical pro war government (who are responsible for the October 7 disaster).
