Letter To The Editor / Adaptation, Reality and Life
Jerry Weinstock
Being a Psychiatrist here in Key West for 40 years –a medical officer With the Marine Corps special forces –prior to that and then did a Medical –Psychiatric residence at the University of Florida upon discharge places me being on the internet still as a Psychiatric Medical Doctor; even though largely retired from active practice I receive calls for appointments. Averaging about 3 a week but lately as many as 10 per week. I speak to the callers to a limited degree, They are experiencing agony. This shaped this column and my mind was set on writing however brief, on” frustration Tolerance”, and perhaps on “ the “ability to tolerate Anxiety” . To put in simply reality is not set up, the world is not there to gratify our every need and desire. Stress levels have increased. We live in a super industrialized- technological world order and furtively that paradigm has overwhelmed empathy and compassion. We come second and machines have surpassed humanistic warmth and compassion. The government, the executive branch has gotten there throw a tear in the space time continuum fabric and no president has entered that office with less experience to govern, and no desire to learn or to truly understand his people or our country. He nourishes his narcissism and his chief virtue is brutality and a huge lean toward shredding democracy In favor of dictatorship-fascism; down with liberty and justice. Both the radical right and Trump get there Ideas from Fox news, a propaganda –sophistry strident voice. Sophistry a fine art , sweet talk, artfully expressed, in a manner to simplify the complexity of the world problems. It is superficially plausible but entirely fallacious. Listening to it a dreadful demonic experience for me. It is distorted and twisted ingeniously, the ancient Greeks had respected teachers that taught the fine practice of sophistry. Fox avoids truth supported by the huge finances of the fossil fuel industry .Paul Ryan hopelessly immature motivated by the fiction of Ayn Rand wants to deprive us human beings of our social democratic foundation, that is a fundamental aspect of our very lives. The chief executive has done nothing but shatter our alliances and shatter our relationships not only with other countries but with everything we fought for and hold sacred. Our inner peace is shattered more every day—as we slide inexorably toward Fascism and the Bill of rights diminishes replaced with chaotic barbarism. This is an underlying factor in our stress and anger. In the meantime our Planet, nature is being shredded. As the great writer genius Richard Wolfe coined the term, “Bull in the China shop” that is what Trump is an infantile perverted retard breaking all within his reach. He is supported by sophistry and outright lies and an economic- capitalism that has shed its morality much like Trump.

So, Dr Weinstock (USMC retired), please tell us how you really feel about things. Don’t hold back anything. Your litany about your feelings of hopelessness and helplessness is a start, a good start.
Heeding the words of a famous philosopher will really help:
Oddball, ‘Kelly’s Heroes movie’ “Why don’t you knock it off with them negative waves. Why don’t you dig how beautiful it is out here? Why don’t you say something righteous and hopeful for a change?”
1. “a medical officer With the Marine Corps special forces –prior to that”
• And here I thought the Marines’ unofficial motto was “Improvise, adapt, and overcome.” You disappoint me as you sound desperate, demoralized and defeated!
2. “10 per week. I speak to the callers to a limited degree, They are experiencing agony.”
• There are an estimated 30,000 psychiatrists in the USA. Pres Trump has been in office almost 76 weeks. That means that approximately 2,280,000 ‘snowflakes’ have melted so far! Pres Trump is having a “uuge success”.
• Can you estimate the number of calls you get from “deplorables (Ms. Clinton’s term)” per week?
If I was a Force Reconnaissance Marine, about to execute a direct action mission, the last thing I would need is counseling by a defeatist shrink. Again, might makes right. Always has and always will. As a 31 years Marine I know that we need pansies in the infermary and not on the front lines.
Freedom isn’t free and for a gracious society to exist, strong ones have to fight the battle for the inept and the ungrateful.
Mr. Sofranac, thank you for your service.
So you are saying that the Marines don’t have a “safe spaces, crying rooms, yellow cards, cookies, coloring books, bubbles, Play-Doh, calming music, pillows, blankets, and a video of puppies” when threatened, stressed, troubled, traumatized, micro-aggressed, victimized or triggered?
This is absolutely shocking, just shocking. So yesterday, so militaristic, so alpha-male. How can they cope without all these back-up aids?
Mr. Sofranac’s reply is totally correct. Most of “civilized” society does not want to know how they afford their civility and nicieties, while outside their doors, the fighters provide their civilization, however unappetizing it may be to swallow.
Upon rereading you letter:
• Is your letter “a call for help?” Don’t psychiatrists have a psychiatrist they can call when “in agony”. If you do call, you will become the 2,280,001 “snowflake that melted”. On the positive side, Obamacare should cover the session/s.
• Most people I meet are “glass half full or half empty” types. You are a glass completely empty type and it appears someone took your glass too! This concerning.
• Let me try an “intervention”. “Snap out of it” (Cher, movie ‘Moonstruck’).
Oh Jerry, Jerry, Jerry. Relax, relax, relax. I’m so glad that you are finally retired from your long held head-shrinking craft. A well deserved retirement is obviously in order for your tortured soul. May I suggest for you some yoga classes, deep therapeutic massages, mud baths and frequent colonic cleanses for your obvious anal retention. Your future will be much brighter when you let go of those pesky control issues that clearly haunt you.
“I receive calls for appointments. Averaging about 3 a week but lately as many as 10 per week. I speak to the callers to a limited degree, They are experiencing agony.”
Given the above, I just realized that Michael Savage’s “Liberalism is a Social Disorder” is a psychiatric textbook. Amazing!
err my bad “Liberalism is a Mental Disorder”
