Letter to the Editor / ACCOUNTABILITY AND DETERRENCE FOR CRIMES AGAINST HUMANITY

By Roger C. Kostmayer

The deliberate act of mass murdering young school girls as part of a terrorist campaign, and that causes great human suffering, is a crime against humanity.  Though such a crime should be handled by the International Criminal Court in the Hague, civilized democracies are also responsible for accountability for and deterrence of such crimes against all humanity.

It was the US and our allies who properly insisted Afghanistan girls and women were entitled to an education, a career and more equality than the local terrorists permitted.  A day or so ago, the terrorists that harbored the Taliban (who attacked our homeland on September 11, 1961), deliberately targeted a girls’ school in Afghanistan and killed more than 50 young innocent children- because they were in school.  It’s hard to imagine a more evil atrocity.

The US and its allies have the aircraft carrier, planes, drones, satellites and necessary intelligence information to find and destroy the leaders and perpetrators responsible for this crime – just as we did with Osama bin Laden.  Accountability, justice and deterrence in this case does not require more “boots on the ground”; and failure to respond appropriately by America and our allies would be hard to explain and would invite similar crimes against humanity in the future.

Our government is now in the process of examining our options.
