LETTER TO THE EDITOR / A KEY WEST STORY

By Roger C. Kostmayer

Most people think their hometown is special, but KW is unique.  Ben Harrison (who wrote the story, the music and the lyrics), the Fringe Theater KW, the great Ragtime Band, and the mostly KW cast of “EL ISLENO 1921” just proved it.

Mostly local talent, they all hit a home run on the opening night of this remarkable musical at the Armory.  This true historical drama from 100 years ago was moving and haunting in ways that are relevant today.  Part of the play’s uniqueness is the unusual truth and courage that often surfaces in local authors, artists, poets, musicians, composers and more.

Think about what small KW has, and doesn’t have, compared to other communities.  It has the best of the best, and the least of the worst.  Like many small American towns, KW (One Human Family) has a strong sense of community, neighborliness and care for others.  But, unlike KW, other small communities lack the culture,  music, arts and environmental opportunities found in both KW and some large urban areas.

Ben Harrison’s new musical drama is an enduring and proud example of what makes KW special.  You don’t want to miss it!
