Letter to Editor / WHO WILL WE BE?

Roger C. Kostmayer

Most countries’ citizens are in their nation because their ancestors: lived there, spoke the same language, worshiped the same gods and even shared similar physical appearances.  The United States of America is unique. We are diverse and have a national Statue of Liberty. Almost everyone in America has immigrant roots who believed in very specific values: freedom, independence, equality, the rule of law (the Constitution), no-one was forced into a religion and they swore never to have a king.

Unfortunately, we are living in a dark and divided period where many have been too young or are now too old to grasp HOW to pledge allegiance to our Constitution that was given to us by our wise founders.

Because it is so important for citizens to determine which candidate or political party would most patriotically protect both All citizens and our Constitution, following are brief layman’s explanations of a few of your Bill of Rights (Amendments):  1st Amendment – the government can not establish, support or prohibit religions; and we all have a right to free speech, freedom of the Press and freedom to march and petition the government.

The 4th Amendment says you, the people, have a right to be safe and secure – as a person, in your house, and you should not be subjected to unreasonable search and seizures.

Amendment V – 5 is about your right to Due Process.  No person should be deprived of their life, liberty or property without due process of the law.

You get the idea and realize these laws are precious rights for each of us.  Now, you are able to listen to politicians or the news and decide if he or she is protecting or is destroying your rights- and you can respond accordingly.

Your decision will determine who we are and what we will be as a nation.
