Letter To Editor / LIFE AND DEATH IN UKRAINE

By Roger C. Kostmayer

The US, NATO and the European Union remain extraordinarily united and are supporting Ukraine and President Zalensky.  Generally, we and our allies are doing things that help the victims. BUT, both defensive and offensive military weapons sent have often been too few and too late.

War, such as the Battle of Britain, shows that the best defense is a good offense.  Unfortunately, the west’s abundance of caution has allowed Putin’s horrific bombardments to increase with impunity, while Ukraine has one arm tied behind its back due to lack of air defense capabilities – like planes and the Patriot surface-to-air missiles that could defend Ukraine civilians.  In addition to purely defensive weapons, Ukraine must be able to attack the attackers in order to save both lives and their infrastructure.  This requires drones, missiles, planes, tanks and ammunition ASAP.

Military experts believe Russia has lost this war but can still destroy Ukraine unless Putin is stopped.  One of Putin’s few effective weapons is to threaten unspecified “consequences”, hoping threats will intimidate US and our allies who now allow him to continue his crimes against humanity with impunity.

Of course the west must continue to be cautious and smart based on good intelligence, but any cowardly dictator who only talks to others from the end of a 30 foot table, to protect himself from germs, should not be allowed to conquer a sovereign nation by perpetuating war and bluffing.

This must change if we are to help Ukraine survive and protect our democracy.
