LETTER TO EDITOR / GUNS and STATES

By Roger C. Kostmayer

Responding to mass killings by guns, varies at the state level from one extreme to another- meaning reducing imminent threats to lives versus increasing that danger. For example, the prompt reaction by Illinois to ban the sale of AR-15 type assault weapons and ammunition was passed and allowed to stand by the Supreme Court – for now. This is a big victory if you are truly “pro life”.

On the other hand, Florida and Texas have both doubled down and rewarded the gun manufacturers by increasing the dangers concomitant with the most deadly weapons. They allow more dangerous people to purchase, and to carry openly, in almost all venues.

By contrast, Maryland has recently signed into law the most obvious common sense steps to save lives. It limits both WHO can carry guns and WHERE they can’t carry them: such as schools, polling places, bars, restaurants, and more public places.

The fundamental difference between the dominant politicians in these different states (Illinois and Maryland or Florida and Texas), is the desire to save lives or a desire to help gun manufacturers. In 2023, most Americans believe there is a simple truth: more guns in the hands of more people means more death and damage to the innocent.

In 2024, most Americans should make sure they vote for candidates who respect and share this simple truth.
