LETTER TO EDITOR / 2024’S TRIFECTA

In horse racing, a bet that accurately names the first three finishers of a future race, is called a trifecta. The following three crises could become either devastating historic tragedies and lost opportunities, or become major steps toward peace, prosperity and secure democracies. It all depends on the quality of leaders. What we should work and hope for is a trifecta of the following.
The United States
The US has a proven anti-democratic dictator trying to get on the ballot for the presidency – by hook or crook. Mostly the latter. While he desires the power and money it could generate, he also needs to pay attention to the 91 legal indictments, almost all of which are serious felonies. Some states (Colorado and Maine so far) have already ruled that this villain is “Constitutionally ineligible” for the Commander in Chief position. Currently, some state justice systems seem to have the facts, law and evidence to prove this potential candidate engaged in an insurrection before, during and after JANUARY 6, 2021 – with intent. Their judicial decisions were based on the plain meaning of Section 3 of the 14th Amendment of the US Constitution, but the ultimate decision will probably be made by the Supreme Court.
Israel, Hamas and Gaza
Who will control, help rebuild and govern Gaza in a way that will make a Two State solution viable? The answer can not be Netanyahu, Israel or its military.
A Major War in the ME
The ME has too many terrorists, with too much support from too many sources, like Iran, and too many countries with chips on their shoulders that tempt violence, retaliation and escalation. Strength with restraint requires good leadership.
Only intelligent, reasonable and principled leaders can make these long shot horses winners, but a new year gives us hope that the world community, and a lot of good people, will not accept less.
