KWPD Records Department Commended

During a recent awards ceremony at the Grand Key Resort, Key West Police Chief Sean Brandenburg presented a Unit Award to the Records Department.

In August the Key West Police Department was faced with a serious threat to the computer network. As a result, all servers on the network had to be shut down, including our electronic Records Management System. That meant all police reports had to be completed on paper forms.

Our records personnel became responsible for the tremendous task of receiving, logging, reviewing, and maintaining all paper police reports completed by our officers. During the shutdown there were over 700 paper reports completed, all of which contained multiple documents associated with the report. Their ability to adapt from their normal electronic record management operations to handling and maintaining thousands of paper documents proved to be invaluable when the system became operational and officers began electronically entering their paper reports.

The Records Section’s effectiveness resulted in little to no impact in making our police records available in a timely manner.
