Keys History & Discovery Center Presents…Lecture Series Kicks-off October 24

New Location for First Lecture

Islamorada – How Tall Tales Reshape Local History is the first presentation of the Keys History & Discovery Center Presents… lecture series, on Wednesday, Oct. 24, 5-7 p.m. For this lecture, the location will be Ocean Sotheby’s International Realty, 81888 Overseas Highway, Islamorada.  Lectures are free for museum members. Cost for non-members is now only $10, thanks in part to grant funding and individual contributions.

To learn more about Tall Tales, join Discovery Center Curator Brad Bertelli as he explores some of the different ways Upper Keys history has been reshaped by local legend and tall tales. When the Seminoles attacked Indian Key in 1840, were they just out to kill Housman because he told the government he would kill them all for $200 each? Were Flagler’s railroad workers really fed manatees corralled at the Cow Pen Keys? The Purple Isles, where exactly did this mythical name originate, and how did a colorful story replace the name of a 60-foot schooner built on Plantation Key? From unreliable narrators to barstool historians, join Bertelli as he talks through some of the facts behind the “history” of these local histories and a few more.

Light appetizers and a cash bar will be available. Reservations are strongly recommended and can be made at 305-922-2237 or info@keysdiscovery.com.

Upcoming lecture topics include Endangered Sawfish of the Florida Keys, the 1733 Spanish Galleon Trail and Study of a Cuban Migrant Craft.
