Keys History & Discovery Center Lecture Covers Folk Art

Mote Marine Laboratory Senior Scientist Emeritus to Present

Keys History & Discovery Center Presents…Eye of the Beholder: An Overview of Sunshine State Folk Art, a live virtual lecture on Wednesday, May 12, 6-7 p.m., by Thomas Lockyear, historian and museum professional.

Join Lockyear as he explores the rich history and cultural importance of the many forms of folk art found in South Florida. Topics will include the work of Keys artists Mario Sanchez and Stanley Papio, Everglades painter Dick Jay, Rob Storter, the Highwaymen, and more.

Lockyear, who is with the Museum of the Everglades, will introduce participants to unlikely historians, aspiring entrepreneurs, and even a few bonified creative geniuses who expressed their unique ideas through the art they created – many with ordinary items and materials found around the house or even scavenged from junkpiles.

Ranging from crude sketches to true masterpieces, the artwork discussed in this presentation will challenge the audience’s definitions of what makes something art and why art is important and ultimately leaving all with the understanding that the answers to those questions are truly in the “eye of the beholder.”

Lecture is free for members and $5 for non-members. Advance registration is required at www.keysdiscovery/lectures. The virtual program utilizes GoToWebinar.
