KEYS HISTORY & DISCOVERY CENTER JOINS SMITHSONIAN MAGAZINE’S 14TH ANNUAL MUSEUM DAY…Free Admission Sept. 22

Islamorada, FL — Keys History & Discovery Center will open its doors free of charge to all Museum Day ticketholders on Saturday, Sept. 22, 2018 as part of Smithsonian magazine’s 14th annual Museum Day, a national celebration of boundless curiosity in which participating museums emulate the free admission policy at the Smithsonian Institution’s Washington DC-based museums.

Museum Day represents a nationwide commitment to access, equity and inclusion. Over 250,000 people downloaded tickets for last year’s event, and Museum Day 2018 is expected to attract more museumgoers than ever before.

“It is an honor for Keys History & Discovery Center to be included in Smithsonian magazine’s Museum Day,” said Executive Director Jill Miranda Baker. “It is our hope this special day brings new visitors ready to learn more about the vast and unique history of the Florida Keys as depicted through numerous exhibits, videos, models and more.”

Keys History & Discovery Center is a world-class museum that preserves and shares the incredible history of our Upper Keys community and explores the unique ecology of the region. In addition to permanent exhibits on subjects such as Henry Flagler’s Over-Sea Railway, Legends of the Line, and First People, the Discovery Center offers a lecture series, educating the public through presentations from a variety of expert speakers. The museum’s second floor features a state-of-the-art theater showing documentaries on topics like the 1935 Labor Day Hurricane and Indian Key, as well as traveling exhibits, and the Jerry Wilkinson Research Library. The center, on the property of the Islander Resort, is open Wednesdays through Sundays, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

Museum Day tickets will be available for download at Smithsonian.com/MuseumDay. Visitors who present a Museum Day ticket will gain free entrance for two at participating venues on Sept. 22. One ticket is permitted per email address. A list of participating museums, which will be continually updated as more museums continue to register, can be found at Smithsonian.com/MuseumDay/Search.
