Key West Sea Turtle Club Establishes Scholarship at FKCC

Members of the Key West Sea Turtle Club gathered at FKCC’s Key West Campus to present a $1,000 donation to establish a new scholarship for marine science students.

KEY WEST, FL, October 19, 2016— A new scholarship will soon be available for Florida Keys Community College students studying marine science thanks to the Key West Sea Turtle Club.  The club’s president Ralph Capone along with several of their volunteers visited the College’s Key West Campus yesterday to present a donation of $1,000 to FKCC President Dr. Jonathan Gueverra to establish the scholarship.

The Key West Sea Turtle Club is a volunteer-driven, nonprofit organization dedicated to the protection of threatened and endangered marine turtles and their habitats. When not scoping the beaches for turtle nests and monitoring the delicate eggs, the club has been selling t-shirts and holding events to raise money for this scholarship.  Since its establishment just last year, the club made it a priority to start a scholarship.

“This is an historic moment for the Key West Sea Turtle Club,” said Capone after presenting the donation.  “We see this scholarship as an investment in the environment.  By supporting the education of future generations of marine scientists, we’re helping to protect and restore marine ecosystems, which sea turtles and countless other organisms rely on.”

The first Key West Sea Turtle Club Scholarship will be distributed by the FKCC Foundation to students enrolled in the fall 2017 semester.  Current scholarship opportunities are posted on the College’s website at www.fkcc.edu.  For more information about supporting the FKCC Foundation, contact Dr. Frank Wood, FKCC Vice-President of Advancement and FKCC Foundation Executive Director at 305-809-3287 or [email protected].
