Key West Resident Honored by Toastmasters

Phyllis May named Outstanding Division Director

MIAMI, FLORIDA (November 17, 2016) — Key West resident Phyllis May has been named Outstanding Division Director by Toastmasters International District 47, a nonprofit communication and leadership orgaization wth more than 3,300 members in South Florida and The Bahamas.

May received the award for the 2015-16 program year at the district’s Fall Conference, held November 4-6 in Miami.

She was recognized for her service to 26 clubs comprising District 47 Division E, which covers south Miami-Dade County and the Keys. Under her supervision in 2015-16, Division E reached President’s Distinguished status, the highest quality level for a division in Toastmasters; Division E finished as the No. 1 division in District 47.

“We were proud to select Phyllis May for this honor,” said District 47 Director Lynda Hammond. “Phyllis is extremely dedicated and devoted to Toastmasters and the members she serves, and personifies the Toastmasters values of integrity, respect, service and excellence. She is admired throughout our organization for her knowledge, her warmth and her great sense of humor.”

May’s sense of humor helped her achieve a second award at the conference, taking second place in the district’s 2016 Humorous Speech Contest. She performed a seven-minute speech, “Which Way Does Your Deck Chair Face?” drawing laughs with her humorous take on life in retirement.

May has been a member of Key West Toastmasters for 18 years. She has held several leadership positions at the club and district levels, including those of club coach, area governor and division director, and has twice managed the district’s semiannual educational conference.
