Key West Contemporary Art A.E. Fournet

Key West Contemporary Art is pleased to announce the opening of Anima/Persona, an exhibition of original photographs by internationally acclaimed photographer A.E. Fournet

Annette Elizabeth Fournet has exhibited her photography in galleries and museums in France, Germany, Poland, Czech Republic, Great Britain, Korea, and the United States. Her work is included in public and corporate collections such as the Bibliotheque Nationale, San Diego Museum of Photographic Art, Houston Museum of Fine Art, Prague House of Photography, New Orleans Museum of Art, and others.

Annette Fournet lives and teaches photography in Memphis, Tennessee and in Prague, Czech Republic.

For this, her first exhibition in the Florida Keys, Fournet will be showing select images from Anima/Persona a series of digital collage portraits influenced in part by Symbolist paintings. The title derives its name from persona (external projection of self) and the anima (inner soul).

“As a young art student I was fascinated by the symbolist painters. I later learned that many of these artists worked from misogynist fears stemming from their discovery that the Victorian notion that women did not have a sexual nature was untrue, and of the nascent women’s movement for equality.”

In addition, local artist and educator Alaina Plowdrey will exhibit several paintings from Origin, her stunning solo exhibition/installation recently shown at the Studios of Key West.  The themes, motifs and observations of the female form in Plowdrey’s work, serve as an ideal counterpoint to the intricate symbolism in Fournet’s portraits.  Rounding out this theme, local jewelry designer Lucas Mejia will present a selection of his work at the opening reception.

The opening reception of Anima/Persona will be held on Thursday, September 8 from 6-8 P.M. It is an official event in the Womenfest schedule. Fournet will be in Key West for the opening reception. In addition she will give an artist talk on Sunday, September 11 11:30- 1 P.M.
