Key West Boys & Girls Club to offer Monroe Computes training and certification program free of charge to Club members and parents

<Monroe/>COMPUTE$, a Computer Science and Internet Technology skill development initiative that creates a “computing platform” of courses and certificates within the county’s school system, will now be offered at the Boys & Girls Club for club members and their parents. The self-paced program will begin on weeknights during their Summer Program in the Club’s computer lab at their Reynolds Street location.

<Monroe/>COMPUTE$ began in 2014 supported by Key West philanthropists John Padget and Jacob Dekker to encourage students in taking more computer classes and be better equipped for a technology-heavy job market. The Boy’s & Girls Club initiative to host the program aligns with their vision in “assuring that success is within reach of every young person who walks through their doors.”

“Our goal is to have parents develop their computer skills to increase their earning potential and job opportunities, as well as enhance a child’s ability to succeed in school and be prepared to compete in a rapidly changing global market place,” says the Club’s Executive Director Dan Dombroski.

Lead by Key West High School IT/computer science Teacher Ebenson Michelin and assisted by Key West High School students who are certified to teach the program, participants will learn proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, with the completion of all three certifying them as Microsoft Office Specialists (MOS).

With support from several foundations, including Keys Open Door Foundation, Deerbrook Foundation and the Boys and Girls Clubs of America, the Club’s computer lab was recently modified with new computer hardware, software, programs and furniture purchased to fully equip 20 work stations that include double monitors.

In addition to the new computing platform and certification program, programming at the Boys & Girls Club of the Keys Area includes tutoring, literacy support, STEM initiatives, computers, sports and recreation, Spanish, dance, drama and photography lessons, health and wellness life skills, and field trips to over 450 Keys children.
