June is Alzheimer’s Awareness Month

Key West Mayor Craig Cates this week declared June as Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month during Tuesday’s City Commission meeting

Alzheimer’s disease, a progressive neurodegenerative brain disorder, tragically robs individuals of their memories and leads to progressive mental and physical impairments and is the sixth leading cause of death in the nation.

According to the proclamation, in the past year, “15.7 million caregivers provided an estimated 18.1 billion hours of unpaid care valued at more than 220 billion dollars. In Florida, over one million caregivers provided over one billion hours of unpaid care valued at an estimated 16 million dollars.”

The proclamation recognizes the efforts of the Alzheimer’s Association to raise funds, provide care and support for those living and caring for someone with Alzheimer’s and promote awareness to fight Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders.
