Immigration Activists Storm Carlos Curbelo’s Office in Protest of Phony Immigration Reform Position

MIAMI, FL – Today, a group of immigration activists protested in front of Republican Rep. Carlos Curbelo’s district office and delivered a letter calling out the vulnerable Republican for pandering on immigration reform while giving money to anti-reform Trump Republicans.

“The immigrant community isn’t buying the lies Curbelo is selling,” said Javier Hernandez, spokesperson for the Joe Garcia campaign. “People in South Florida remember when Curbelo opposed President Obama’s executive actions and even called for the deportation of immigrant children. Now he wants to pander for votes while giving money to enemies of immigration reform.”

When President Obama signed his executive actions on immigration, Curbelo went on the air to call for a lawsuit against the move that protected millions of families from separation. During the same interview, Curbelo flatly said he did “not support amnesty,” and called for the deportation of children and teenagers detained at the border during the 2014 crisis.

In Congress, he opposed the President’s executive action. He is also a die-hard supporter of House Speaker Paul Ryan, even going as far as saying he is “always all-in for Paul Ryan.” The same Paul Ryan who pledged to take no action on immigration reform. Curbelo continues to endorse anti-DACA candidates like Marco Rubio.

Curbelo is running for reelection against former Congressman Joe Garcia. Garcia was the author of the only comprehensive immigration reform bill in the 114^th Congress. When Republican leadership blocked any votes on the bill, Garcia joined a group of Democrats in asking President Obama for executive action.
