HURRICANE DEBRIS CLEANUP TO TEMPORARILY CLOSE ROWELL’S WATERFRONT PARK
MONROE COUNTY, FL – Due to hurricane cleanup operations in canals throughout Monroe County, contractors will use temporary staging sites for debris collection across Monroe County, including Rowell’s Waterfront Park in the Upper Keys. This will require the park to close in mid-August (sometime after August 12). County Officials expect operations to continue 7-8 months.
“This large-scale operation will require the use of staging areas from which debris can be hauled to the mainland,” explained Kevin Wilson, Assistant County Administrator.
County Officials obtained funds to clear hurricane debris from canals by successfully obtaining a grant from the Emergency Watershed Protection Program of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service. A total of $49.2 million is available under this grant, of which $35 Million has been contracted with Tavernier-based Adventure Environmental for canal cleanup services. Adventure Environmental hired two local companies (ASAP Marine Contractors of Tavernier and Arnolds Towing and Salvage of Stock Island), as well as Tetra Tech, Inc. commercial diving division, to work on the project. The crews will be cleaning up canals simultaneously at different locations throughout the Keys. Of the 103 canals, eight are in the Upper Keys, 23 in the Middle Keys and 72 in the hardest hit Lower Keys.
