Hunger and Homeless Awareness Week

During Tuesday’s regular City Commission meeting, Mayor Teri Johnston proclaimed this week as National Hunger and Homeless Awareness Week.

This annual observation comes as many prepare for the Thanksgiving holiday. This year this situation is particularly dire as so many struggle with job loss, loss of homes, and hunger.

Florida Keys Outreach Coalition’s Stephanie Kaple noted, as she accepted the proclamation, that many organizations and local governments have been contributing to ensure that no one in the community goes hungry.

For the past 30 years the National Coalition for the Homeless and National Student Campaign Against Hunger and Homelessness have sponsored National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week to help to educate the public about the many reasons people are hungry and homeless including the shortage of affordable housing in the City of Key West, especially for very low income residents.

The proclamation also encourages support of homelessness assistance service providers as well as community service opportunities for students and school service organizations.
