HUMANITY IS A PROCESS

Humanity, by definition, is a noun, and we have all been taught that a noun is a person, place, or thing. One day while sipping con leche and watching the world go by at the local laundromat I experienced an epiphany. Humanity is most certainly not a noun, but a process. Sitting there I witnessed diversity come together, like the many colored strands that weave a tapestry to represent the flow of life in something common to all people. I realized it is not appearance that defines humanity, but process. Humanity, at its core, is a verb, like running or growing or laughing or loving, humanity is the process of us.

When we are involved in the process of life, we are involved in humanity. Not all processes are beautiful and liberating, but we are never alone in them and that is reassuring. Grocery shopping after work can be a claustrophobic time, waiting out the line on your lunch break at the post office, trying to find a parking spot downtown, having a disagreement with your significant other…nobody likes these parts of the process but something that makes them easier to get through is knowing you are not the only one undergoing those type of experiences.

Higher process is fueled by inspiration. The places we find inspiration are as widely varied as those who seek them. For some it’s a map, for another it’s a song, a bicycle, a pair of running shoes, a kayak and paddle, a friend, a book, a new pathway, I have even known people who find office supplies inspiring. Yep, office supplies. I guess what I’m saying here is that its not so much what we find inspiring as the process those items inspire us to do, the fire it lights inside of us to create the flow of humanity. It doesn’t matter if your fuel is a paddle board or a paper clip, what matters is what you do with it. I’ve seen a lawyer wield a notary stamp like Shaun White rides a snowboard, with artistic grace. Both were in their element, their field of well being, a state of theta and their point of creative contribution defined by their own personal journey.

Humanity is a symphony of souls, our bodies the instruments and our actions the music. There are sections and layers and chairs, tiers and timing, repeats, codas and codes, and the culmination of it all, the frequency of humanity. The sound of a soul is very high pitched, the sound of many souls sings us all into existence, humanity is the manifestation of the Symphony of Souls. We claim our chair, play our part, practice our role, sometimes we’re part of the backup chorus and sometimes we pull a solo, there is no part more important than another, together it all creates the beautiful grand show we know as Life. So suit up, show up, play long, and play loud, for it’s in the process we are joined.
