Key West Fire Chief Alan Averette wants to remind the community that personal fireworks displays are not allowed unless permitted by the fire department.

The City Code of Ordinances stipulates that, even with the permit, fireworks must be supervised by the fire department and handled by a licensed pyrotechnician.

That means, outside of sparklers, fireworks are prohibited within the city limits. Key West has a large number of old wooden structures, and illegal fireworks pose a threat of fire as well as injury.

“Our main concern is that everyone remains safe,” he said, “while celebrating New Year’s Eve.”
