Home burglar flees on U.S. 1

A 43-year-old Stratford, Connecticut man was arrested Thursday after breaking into an Islamorada home and fleeing from Deputies on U.S. 1.

Walter Charles Litzie was charged with burglary, larceny, and fleeing and eluding.

The Sheriff’s Office was called to a home on the 76000 block of the Overseas Highway at approximately 3 p.m. A property caretaker there stated an unknown man, later identified as Litzie, walked into the residence and falsely claimed he recently bought the home.

The Sheriff’s Office arrived and was attempting to gather information about Litzie when Litzie got into a Chevrolet sedan. Litzie was ordered to stop, but he fled the scene.

He continued fleeing on U.S. 1 while speeding and illegally passing motorists. The pursuit was called off for safety reasons.

Litzie eventually pulled into a parking lot on the 84000 block of the Overseas Highway and surrendered.

Man and juvenile arrested in dinghy engine theft

A 46-year-old man and a 17-year-old male were arrested Thursday in the theft of an outboard boat engine from a Key Colony Beach residence.

Sean Joseph Fontenot was charged with dealing in stolen property and violation of probation and the juvenile was charged with grand theft and dealing in stolen property.

Sheriff’s Office Detectives and Key Colony Beach Police Officers began investigating after the missing engine was reported on Thursday. That investigation led them to Fontenot who lives on a nearby sailboat along with the juvenile.

The juvenile admitted to stealing the engine and attempting to sell it. Fontenot admitted that he had knowledge of that and his intention was to dump the engine in the water.

The engine was found on Fontenot’s sailboat and returned to the victim.
