HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE MONROE COUNTY BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS APRIL 17

Hurricane Irma Financial Update:

As of March 31, 2019, the County has submitted $49.5 million in projects for FEMA reimbursement. FEMA has approved $41.4 million of those submitted expenses and forwarded the approvals to the state Division of Emergency Management for its approval. Once the state approves expenses, FEMA can obligate the money to the State for payment to the County.

As of March 31, 2019, the state has approved about $11.4 of the $41.4 million with the remaining $30 million still in the first review phase.

FEMA has obligated the $11.4 million approved by the state and made those funds available to the State for distribution to the County. The State also does a second review process before sending the money to the County. To date, the County has received $7.1 million of that $11.4 in FEMA-obligated funds.

Budget and Finance Director Tina Boan has received written confirmation that an additional $11 million for debris removal has been 100 percent validated at the state level. She expects the funding to come through before the May 2019 BOCC meeting.

“We have a good working relationship with the Division of Emergency Management and we are continuing to move forward,” Boan said.

Regarding the County’s $6 million appeal of basecamp expenses, County Administrator Roman Gastesi is optimistic the denial of reimbursement will be overturned.
