Health Department to Observe LatinX AIDS Awareness Day, October 15

The Florida Department of Health in Monroe County in partnership with AH Monroe County, the Coral City Elks Lodge 610, and Temple 400,  will join the rest of the state and nation to bring awareness of National LatinX  (pronounced “La-teen-ex” or “La-teen-ek-eh”) Awareness Day.  This year’s theme is: “Living with HIV or not… we’re fighting this together”.  HIV/AIDS is a serious public health issue for the Hispanic/Latino community.

Stigma, language barriers are still factors that contribute to the higher rates on HIV infections in the Latinx Communities.  Get the facts. Learn about HIV testing, treatment, and prevent, and share this information with partners, family and friends in your communities.

CDC recommends that everyone between the ages of 13 and 64 get tested for HIV at least once as part of routine health care and those at high risk get tested at least once a year.

If you know you are HIV-negative the following activities are highly effective and can help keep you from getting HIV:

  1. Using condoms the right way every time you have anal or vaginal sex.
  2. Taking medicine to  prevent HIV (pre-exposure prophylaxis),or PrEP if you are HIV-negative and at high risk for getting the virus.
  3. Limiting your number of sex partners.
  4. Sharing syringes or other equipment or works to inject drugs.
  5. Abstinence (not having sex) and not sharing syringes or works are 100% effective ways to make sure you won’t get HIV from sex or injecting  drugs.

All are invited to attend the upcoming awareness day event which will feature free music and refreshments. The event will be held on:
