Health Department Recognizes the City of Key West as a Healthy Weight Community Champion

The Florida Department of Health in Monroe County presents the Healthy Weight Community Champion Award to the City of Key West, at Tuesday Night’s City Commission Meeting at Key West City Hall.  The City of Key West was recognized as one of three local governments in Monroe County that has implemented a variety of best practice policies that have been shown to increase physical activity and improve nutrition.  The other municipalities, Marathon and the Village of Islamorada, will be awarded later this month.  One of the many best practices that the City of Key West is working on to promote Healthiest Weight Florida ideals is their Bike and Pedestrian Master Plan to make Key West a safer place to walk and bike. The City also regularly provides vegetable seedlings for residents and partners with the local extension service to teach people how to establish gardens in their own backyards.  For more information about the recognition, visit www.healthiestweightflorida.com.
