Governor Appoints Retired Tavernier Executive to Florida Keys Mosquito Control District Board of Commissioners

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has tapped retired Tavernier Bank Executive Bette Brown to fill the vacant district 5 seat on the Florida Keys Mosquito Control District (FKMCD) Board of Commissioners. The appointment became necessary last month following the death of long-time FKMCD Commissioner Tom McDonald.

Ms. Brown previously served as the Executive Vice President and Chief Credit Officer for Community Bank of Florida. She has been a Monroe County resident for more than 40 years and served on the Citizens Property Insurance Corporation Board of Governors.

In addition, Ms. Brown is a member of the Upper Keys Rotary Club Board. She holds a bachelor’s degree from Stetson University.

Appointed FKMCD District 5 Commissioner, Bette Brown Said:

“ I am excited for the opportunity to work with the staff and commissioners of such a top rated mosquito control district. I am also looking forward to learning the science behind what we do to protect our community against mosquitos.”

FKMCD Executive Director, Andrea Leal Said:

“The Florida Keys Mosquito Control District is looking forward to working along side Bette Brown. It is clear that her previous service to the local community makes her a great fit for our board as we continue our important mission to protect public health.”

Former FKMCD District 5 Commissioner Tom McDonald passed away in early November following a tragic accident. Bette Brown will serve the remainder of his term which began in 2022.

The next FKMCD Board Meeting is currently scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 16th.
