Getting Ready for the Parade
Five of the “Flagler’s Conch Comet” creative team, back row, left to right, John Ortiz, Ryan Stachurski, Marley Claridge, and Dee Dee Green, and Nouba, foreground, are seen with the beginning framework for their Papio Kinetic Sculpture and Art Bike Parade entry, under construction now from an assortment of recycled materials, including bikes from a scrap yard, bed rails found on the street, beer can tops, old jewelry, and even dried Spanish limes.
There’s still time for teams and individuals of all ages to register for the parade that kicks off from the Custom House Museum at 5:00pm on Saturday, May 5 – part of a three-day celebration of the late Keys rebel-artist Stanley Papio. Registration for kinetic sculpture floats is $25, registration deadline Tuesday, May 1. Art bike registration is $15, registration deadline, Friday, May 4. All registered participants get free admission to the post-parade festival and Poi Dog Pondering concert at the Truman Waterfront Amphitheater! Registration form and general information available at papiokineticparade.com. Presented by Key West Art & Historical Society and co-produced by Wonderdog Studios, the Papio Kinetic Sculpture Parade is supported in part by the State of Florida Division of Cultural Affairs, The Helmerich Trust, and the Monroe County Tourist Development Council.
