Garcia: Let’s Stop Playing Partisan Politics with a Public Health Crisis

Today, former Congressman Joe Garcia, in a press conference alongside south Florida doctors, nurses, mothers-to-be and concerned residents, demanded that Congressional leadership take immediate action to approve Zika funding.

“It’s not about left or right–it’s about moving forward. Our families are at risk because of partisan dysfunction. I ask that congressional leadership work with Republicans and Democrats to find a solution and approve President Obama’s full $1.9 billion funding request,” said Joe Garcia, candidate for Florida’s 26th Congressional District. “When it comes to the safety of our children and families, we need to stop playing politics with an urgent public health crisis. Congress needs to do its job, work across the aisle, and put our country first because South Florida families can’t wait any longer.”

Garcia has repeatedly called on Congress to fully fund the effort against Zika, even penning a letter with Congressman Filemon Vela (D-TX) to Speaker Paul Ryan asking that Republican leadership get back to work and provide federal and state agencies with the funding they need to address the Zika crisis.

“Congress has a responsibility to act, and Congressional leadership–enabled by Republicans like Carlos Curbelo–should stop working to further their partisan agenda and instead bring a bipartisan Zika funding bill to the floor. This negligence is criminal,” said Javier Hernandez, spokesperson for the Garcia Campaign. “Republicans like Carlos Curbelo can’t make empty statements calling for Zika funding and then walk lockstep in support of the same leadership that refuses to take action.”
