Fringe Theater Opens its 15th Season with ART

Fringe Theater opens its fifteenth season with the award-winning comedy, ART, by French playwright Yasmina Reza. The play will run November 7th – 11th, at the Fringe Theater, located at 600 White Street in the Key West Armory.

The play premiered in 1994 in Paris and quickly moved to London then Broadway where it won the New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award and the Tony Award for Best Play. The comedy enjoyed a 600-performance run on Broadway and has since been produced in 45 countries and translated into more than 30 languages.

The plot revolves around three friends whose bonds are tested when one of them purchases an incredibly expensive, very modern, entirely white painting. This simple acquisition sparks a contentious and introspective series of conversations about the nature of art, the value of friendship, and the boundaries of individuality.

Yasmina Reza, who also wrote the Tony Award winning God of Carnage, has earned international recognition for her writing. Her plays, novels, and films navigate the human condition with humor, sharp dialogue, and incisive wit. Reza’s works often dissect the complexities of human relationships and societal norms. In the case of ART, Reza is exploring the complexities of friendship and individualism.

Fringe Theater’s production of ART is directed by its Managing Artistic Director Rebecca Tomlinson. “This is a smart comedy about connections that go awry. Three good guys are trying to work their way through what their friendship means. Of course, that meant we needed three actors who share a real chemistry — which we have!”

ART features Trey Forsyth, Tim Dahms and Thomas Masat.

Trey Forsyth (Serge) has been performing in Key West for the last fifteen years including last year’s Fringe hit production of El Isleño 1921. Tim Dahms (Marc) began his performance career behind the scenes in TV but moved to the stage when he moved to Key West almost 20 years ago. Audiences will remember Tim from his performance in Fringe’s The Clean House. Thomas Masat (Yvan) is a recent transplant to the island. His background in stand-up comedy led him to a Fringe audition. ART will be his first stage performance … in a very long time!

ART also features the work of Fringe Theater’s design and production team — Kendall Cameron, Aramis Ikatu, Samatha Laskey, Christopher Massicotte, and Jim Beyl.

ART runs five nights only, Nov 7-11, at 7pm. Tickets for ART can be purchased online at keystix.com or by calling the KeysTix Box Office at 305-295-7676. Advance tickets are suggested for this limited seating limited run. For more information about this show or any Fringe Theater production, please visit fringetheater.org or email [email protected].
