FRINGE THEATER KEY WEST PRESENTS PULITZER PRIZE WINNING CLASSIC

TALLEY’S FOLLY BY LANFORD WILSON

SHOW DATES: JAN 8 – 18 2020

Fringe Theater presents Talley’s Folly, by Lanford Wilson, in the Back Room at the Key West Theater, Jan 8-18 2020.  This poignant story of second chances, won the Pulitzer Prize and Drama Circle Award in 1980. It was also nominated for the Tony award for Best Play.

“The play is a love-story of sorts,” says Fringe’s Artistic Director, Rebecca Tomlinson.  “And by that I mean it’s a story about choosing to love despite the setbacks of life.” Which in the case of the play’s protagonists includes the loss of dreams, the devastation of World War II, and the existence of cultural intolerance.

Matt is an accountant and Jewish immigrant and Sally is a nurse from a conservative Southern family. After a lifetime of believing they’ll never truly belong in the world around them, Matt has worked up the courage to convince her that they can find a sense of belonging together.

The play is the directorial debut of Mathias Maloff, who works with Fringe Theater’s Education program and is a popular local actor. Audiences will remember him most recently from Fringe’s Conch Republic the Musical, Theater XP’s The Classics of Comedy, and the Waterfront’s Young Frankenstein. The production stars Lauren Thompson as Sally and Ross Pipkin as Matt.

Talley’s Folly is written by Lanford Wilson, one of the most renowned US playwrights of the late 20th century. Wilson had a penchant for exploring themes of love and loss through characters who were  on the fringes of society. He was a co-founder of Off-Broadway’s celebrated Circle Repertory Company and is also the author of Balm in GileadThe Hot l Baltimore, and Burn This.

The New York Times said of the play, “Mr. Wilson is one of our most gifted playwrights, a dramatist who deals perceptively with definably American themes. Talley’s Folly is a play to savor and cheer.” The New York Post cites, “A funny, sweet, touching, and marvelously contrived love poem for an apple from an orange.”

Talley’s Folly runs January 8 – 18 at 7pm in the Back Room at the Key West Theater, located at 512 Eaton Street. Doors open at 6:30pm. Key West Theater offers a full bar and delicious munchies.
