Fresh From Cuba!

Though increasingly cut off from our beloved Cuba, her heartbeat is in tune with that of the keys. Summer hits us both; it’s heat, the gift of the blossoming Royal Poinciana and the slowing of pace. Here on Stock Island at Collections gallery, we have yet another gift direct from Cuba – ART!

Ernesto Pumariega paints with a double-edged brush. His architectural pieces are street scenes of old Havana; romantic imagery filled with multi-story dwellings, squangled and tettering, lush yet soft. The other side of his brush is that of inventions and flying machines, symbolically weaving through trials and tribulations.  Within these paintings, Ernesto patches and makes ready the broken gadgets of yesterday.  His canvas’ transcend a hopeless plight while attempting at all cost to repair and renew hope.

Strong and expressionistic, Guillermo Socarras’s figurative work speaks of a colorful, brilliant world. Flowers bloom, lovers fly and abundance is the norm. His work portrays an ethereal world where passion abounds and cares are none. The brush strokes are bold and lyrical; reflectively as dynamic as his message. Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, we invite you to be the judge. Six other Cuban artists join their ranks and adorn our walls!

Next month – Olga Manosalvas – at both the Custom’s House’s main exhibition gallery, July 19 – September 30th , and at Collections Key West, 6810 Front St, Stock Island, just down the dock from the Hogfish. Please call for a viewing as hours are random. 305-923-4778.
