Florida teenager wins 9-mile open-water swim in Florida Keys

ISLAMORADA, Fla. (AP) — A Florida teenager has won an annual open-water swimming competition off the Florida Keys.

Seventeen-year-old Noah Zhang of Jupiter completed the 9-mile Swim for Alligator Lighthouse event Saturday in 3 hours and 46 minutes.

Islamorada residents David Jacobson, Tracy Collett, Robert Kelley and Eric Wunderlich won the four-person relay division with a time of 4:09:18. Bennett Rodriguez and Carly Hyman, both from Hollywood, Fla., won the two-person division in a time of 3:50:05.

The event attracted 181 competitors who swam from Islamorada’s shoreline to the lighthouse and back amid calm seas under mostly sunny skies.

The annual event raises awareness about a need to preserve the 143-year-old Alligator Lighthouse and five other aging lighthouses off the Keys no longer maintained and used for maritime navigation.
