Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority Announces Wastewater Rate Reduction

Florida Keys – August 31, 2016 – A 15% wastewater rate reduction was ratified by the Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority’s Board of Directors for all customers located in the FKAA’s wastewater districts. The FKAA currently provides wastewater services to the residents of Bay Point, Big Coppitt, Duck Key, Conch Key, Key Haven and Layton, as well as those located in the Cudjoe Regional Wastewater Service Area. The decrease is due, in large part, to the economies of scale realized with the opening of the Cudjoe Wastewater Treatment Plant, one of the largest and most important environmental projects in the Florida Keys. To date approximately half of the 7,300 properties in the service area have been invited to connect and the remainder, with the exception of some outlying islands, are expected to be invited by the end of 2016. Additional cost savings were garnered through staff’s diligent efforts to achieve optimal treatment processes in a dynamic environment

“By expanding our service area and rate base we are able to spread fixed expenses, reducing the cost per customer, while also achieving a tremendous reduction in nutrient discharges to nearshore waters,” said Kirk Zuelch, Executive Director, FKAA.

While smaller projects, such as providing central wastewater service to the residents of Long Key are still underway, the completion of the Cudjoe Regional Wastewater System represents the final major step in the execution of the Monroe County Wastewater Plan.
