FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION SECRETARY SHAWN HAMILTON VISITS FLORIDA KEYS

MONROE COUNTY, FL – Monroe County Administrator Roman Gastesi was pleased to meet with the Florida Dept. of Environmental Protection Secretary Shawn Hamilton on Friday in Marathon.

Gastesi highlighted Florida Keys’ resilience needs and the progress Monroe County has made at “ground zero” for resilience, including the County’s soon-to-be-completed roads adaptation plan, a comprehensive strategy to elevate and enhance roadways throughout unincorporated Monroe County. Gastesi thanked him for the State funding and support for the Twin Lakes, Stillwright Point, and Sands Subdivision projects, neighborhoods plagued by sea-level rise.

He also discussed the importance of the State’s support of Monroe County’s popular vessel pump-out program and the derelict vessel program, which help keep nearshore waters clean.

“Mr. Hamilton was very intuitive about Florida Keys’ environmental issues,” said Gastesi. “We look forward to continuing our work with the Department to protect Monroe County’s unique environment.”
