Florida College System Foundation Doubles Locally Raised Funds for FKCC

KEY WEST, FL, —Florida College System (FCS) Foundation Board Member John Padget presented a check on behalf of the FCS Foundation for $16,157 to the Florida Keys Community College (FKCC) Foundation yesterday. The donation matches locally raised funds for scholarships for students in the nursing program as well as students who are the first in their families to attend college.  Padget is also the Vice Chair of the Florida State Board of Education and a member of the FKCC Foundation Board of Directors.

Of the total, $10,387 was provided by Florida Blue for nursing students, which matches donations to the FKCC Foundation from organizations such as the Hemingway Look-Alike Society, the Lower Keys Women’s Club, and the American Legion Post 28.  Additionally, the Helios Education Foundation donated $643 and Bank of America contributed $5,127 to match amounts raised locally to support first-generation-in-college student scholarships. The primary local donor for such scholarships is FKCC President Emeritus Dr. William A. Seeker.  Dr. Seeker, the first in his family to earn a college degree, established the Sue and Albert Seeker First Generation in College Scholarship in 2007 in honor of his parents.  Since its inception, Dr. Seeker has been responsible for approximately 150 scholarships to first-generation-in-college students.

“The FKCC Foundation is very grateful to receive these scholarship donations that will help FKCC students achieve their academic and personal goals,” said Dr. Frank Wood, FKCC Vice President of Advancement and the Executive Director of the FKCC Foundation.  “Scholarship awards allow students to focus on intellectual challenges rather than financial ones; they reaffirm dreams.”
