FKSPCA:  RESCUE TAILS / “TAZ”

BY TAMMY FOX-ROYER

As I was packing up my office getting ready to move into our new animal shelter, I came across this story from 2014.  It still brings tears of joy to my eyes.  If you’ve ever wondered if animals have their own guardian angels, this story may clinch it for you.

“Taz” was surrendered to us along with several other cats a few weeks before Christmas.  Taz was 18 years old and this is his story as we were later able to piece it together.

Taz was adopted as a 6-week old kitten in 1997 and grew up in a loving family with a mom, step-dad and daughter, Sabre.  Mom and Sabre absolutely adored this cat.  When mom passed away in 2012, the step-dad moved out and took Taz with him.  Then when the step-dad left the Keys, he gave Taz away to a woman in town.  Sabre was furious but wasn’t in a position to do anything about it.

When the woman lost her home, she gave Taz away again to an older lady who had just lost her own cat. Fortunately, this lady simply doted on Taz, cooking him breakfast every morning and taking great care of Taz. Sadly, the older lady passed away and Taz, along with three other cats, were surrendered to the shelter.

Since Taz was 18 years old at this point, we knew that he could be difficult to adopt, so we featured him on our website and Facebook page to search for a potential new owner.

And that’s when Taz’ guardian angel appeared.  Sabre saw Taz on Facebook and instantly knew that he was her childhood friend.  Sabre raced to the FKSPCA during her lunch hour and sure enough, it was him.

Sabre burst into tears at the sight of Taz, who immediately started rubbing up against Sabre and purring like a kitten.  Sabre adopted Taz that same afternoon.

As Sabre tells us, “It’s absolutely wonderful to have Taz back in my life.  But it’s also like having a piece of my mother back, as well.  She simply adored Taz. I just can’t believe this happened.”

We are overjoyed that Taz is back with you again! If you’d like to help more pets find wonderful homes, please contact us at the FKSPCA (tammy@fkspca.org) or go to our website at www.FKSPCA.org.
