FKSPCA: RESCUE TAILS / “STEVE BUSCEMI GETS ADOPTED!”

A few weeks after Hurricane Irma, as neighbors were beginning to return to their homes, reports starting pouring in to our Marathon Campus about a lonely white and brown dog roaming the empty houses and lots in the Coco Plum area of Marathon. Neighbors, construction workers and good Samaritans were concerned that the dog was underweight and eating out of garbage piles.

The white dog was very afraid and eluded everyone that tried to help. Animal Control Officers went out day after day with food and treats but even McDonald’s cheeseburgers wouldn’t win the shy dog over! Turns out the way to this dog’s heart was with a box of MRE’s that FEMA had been handing out!

Finally safe, the dog, later named Steve Buscemi for his likeliness to the famous actor, went straight to the Vet for an exam. He was malnourished and full of hookworms and would require several weeks of quality food, medications and TLC. Steve, the dog that evaded his captors for weeks, quickly bloomed at the shelter into an adorable, lovable, friendly and outgoing dog!

Erin and Scott had lost their beloved dog nearly a year ago. They had considered adopting a new family member but never quite felt that the time was right. When they heard about Steve’s story and saw his adorable face, they knew instantly that he was the piece that was missing in their family! Once Steve was healthy enough to be adopted, he went right into his new home with Erin and Scott and the three of them have been inseparable ever since!

With so much loss as a result of Irma, it warms my heart to know that happy endings are always possible.
