FKSPCA:  RESCUE TAILS / “HOWARD”

BY TAMMY FOX-ROYER
Executive Director Florida Keys SPCA

Howard was surrendered to the Key West campus of the FKSPCA as a stray.  A person on Rockland Key had been feeding Howard but noticed a bad wound on his back that he thought needed medical attention.  So we picked up Howard and immediately took him to the Vet.

We quickly started Howard on medication – including oral steroids.  His wound began to heal but the steroids didn’t help in the weight department.  Already a large cat with a lot of muscle, Howard quickly grew to 24 pounds.

Howard is now on a strict diet which also means that he needs to be isolated from other cats during feeding times – since Howard is happy to eat all the food in the room.  But he is now losing weight and getting healthier every day.

Since his wound is taking a long time to heal, Howard needs to wear shirts so that he doesn’t groom himself and re-open the wound.  Fortunately, Howard has developed a local fan club who bring him shirts of all styles and Howard is happy to pose in them. To say that Howard has charisma is an under-statement.  This is one unforgettable cat – who is looking for his forever home in the Florida Keys.

If you would like to help us find forever homes for more animals like Howard, please contact me at tammy@fkspca.org.  And feel free to bring him a new shirt – he loves them!
