FKSPCA:  RESCUE TAILS / “BUSTER”

BY TAMMY FOX-ROYER
Executive Director Florida Keys SPCA

Oh, what love can do! We recently received a very special update from Beth and Brad who adopted a very special Golden Retriever back in 2015.  I will let them tell the story in their own words.

“I recently saw an FKSPCA ‘adoption update’ post on Facebook and it inspired me to write this in the hope that the next ‘someone’ who goes to the shelter doesn’t pass by the old ugly, mangy dog.

“Right before Thanksgiving 2015, I got a call from the Marathon Campus and told there was an 8-year old, severely neglected, Golden Retriever who had been confiscated from its owner. He was in very bad shape and needed someone who could see him through his numerous medical issues. My husband and I took him home.

“This half-bald, half-starved, flea-bitten, ears swollen to the point of near-deafness, dysplastic, epileptic, allergic to the world dog quickly stole our hearts.

“With time and love Buster got fluffy and fat. His most serious medical conditions never went away, but we managed them through great vet care (thank you Dr. Gerry!!) and medication.

“A short 22 months later (September 2017), we lost Buster. We never really had the time to mourn our loss since right after losing him, a mandatory hurricane evacuation of the Keys was called.  Maybe that’s why it’s hitting me today.  Who knows?

“But what I do know is that Buster was a wonderful dog who deserved so much more than he got in this life. I wish Buster had been given more time with us. I wish his first 8 years hadn’t been ones of misery and neglect.  But I’m happy that for the last 22 months of his life, he was loved and cared for.

“My ‘adoption update’ is simple: Sometimes the best dog may not stay long in your life, but maybe, just maybe, the best dog is that old dog everyone else walked past.”

All of us here at the Florida Keys SPCA sincerely thank Beth and Brad for their love and compassion.  If you have room in your heart for a dog like Buster, please contact me at tammy@fkspca.org or come visit us at our Key West or Marathon campuses.  www.fkspca.org
